The Honorable Angela L. Claxton was born in Tallulah, Louisiana and is a life-long resident of Madison Parish. She is a honor graduate of Reuben McCall Senior High School (1991), Louisiana Tech University (1995) and the Southern University Law Center (2006).

Immediately following law school, Judge Claxton served as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Ramona Emmanuel at the 1st Judicial District Court in Shreveport, Louisiana, a role that she held for about six months. Desiring to be closer to home, Judge Claxton accepted a Staff Attorney position with Legal Services of North Louisiana in Monroe, Louisiana in February 2007. She remained in that position for one year.

In early 2008, Judge Claxton entered into private practice in her hometown of Tallulah. Her practice primarily consisted of criminal defense, family law and succession and estate planning. She also served as Magistrate for the Town of Lake Providence from 2015-2020 and as an Assistant Public Defender with the Sixth Judicial District Public Defenders Office from February 2008-June 2019. In July 2019, Judge Claxton was named the Interim Chief Public Defender and later became the permanent Chief Public Defender in November 2019. Judge Claxton served in that capacity until her election to the bench.

Judge Claxton was elected as District Judge - Division A of the Sixth Judicial District Court on November 3, 2020 and was sworn in on December 30, 2020. Her term began officially on January 1, 2021. She presides over civil, criminal, juvenile and domestic matters.

Judge Claxton strongly believes that “to whom much is given, much is required”. In that respect, she strives to give of her time and talents as often and as much as possible. She is a member of numerous social, judicial and legal organizations, including but not limited to the Louisiana State Bar Association, National Bar Association, Louisiana Judicial Council-NBA, Louisiana District Judges Association and Louis A. Martinet Society – Monroe Chapter. She is a Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, where she currently serves as Graduate Advisor to the Theta Zeta Chapter located on the campus of University of Louisiana

– Monroe. Judge Claxton is a member of the Southern University Alumni Federation and also a board member of Louisiana CASA Association, Ivy Merit Foundation, Inc. and Pine Region Legal Aid.

Judge Claxton is the proud mother of one daughter, Kaitlyn Simone Turner; they are faithful members of the Greater Grove Street M. B. Church in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
